“Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation
in the reader~not the fact that it is raining,
but the feeling of being rained upon.”

  1. I don’t necessarily achieve that response with Doctorow’s writing. I did like Homer and and Langley but mainly because the life of the Collier brothers is so compelling. Waterworks…the plot is interesting as is some of the description, but throughout, no. Also, editors can make or break a work, so I find that the authors who have “made it” get the benefit of excellent editors. And that can make all the difference in the world. But even with Waterworks, the book, for me, missed.
