The Power of Forgiveness #WATWB

Welcome to the “We are the World Blogfest” (#WATWB ). The #WATWB was inspired by a simple conversation about how all the negativity on social media was weighing on us. Wanting to make a difference we decided to try to do our part to infuse social media with all the good stories that are out there. We hope to share the stories that show kindness, compassion, hope, overcoming challenges and in general, the impressive resilience of the human spirit. For every dark, negative story out there, there is a positive, heartwarming story that will add some light and lift the human spirit. The last Friday of every month bloggers will share their stories led by five co-hosts, this month’s co-hosts are Shilpa Garg, Peter Nena, Eric Lahti, Roshan Radhakrishnan and Inderpreet Kaur Uppal

In 1995, Ples Felix’s 14-year-old grandson, Tony Hicks, as part of a drug and alcohol-fueled gang initiation shot and killed Azim Khamisa’s son Tariq in cold blood. Losing his son was perhaps one of the worse tragedies any parent could endure. It could have spawned more hate, more anger which under the circumstances would be expected. However that is not what Azim Khamisa wanted for his life, or his son’s memory. Azim decided that anger would not be the solution, both boys were victims. In the same vein Felix had to face the fact that his grandson was responsible for killing another person, an innocent teen. Both teens had a life ahead of them, that would no longer be. Felix and his grandson met with Azim from there life changed for all of them. Khamisa and Felix both had to travel down paths of deep meditation and prayer to focus on forgiveness, instead of issuing blame and both chose to become part of the solution. In a courageous act of these two men are working together, using their story to cultivate a more empathetic, peaceful and compassionate society showing victims of tragedy that they can grow and heal. They started the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to educate, counsel and support children and teens on how to live life with peace and empathy. The video below tells their story….

“Peace is possible,” Khamisa says. “How do I know that? Because I am at peace.”

  1. I absolutely love this! These men were wise enough to recognise something very important that we ought to ponder too: anger and revenge are a choice we (can) make. They’re not the option and they’re definitely not the best one! Thank you for sharing their example!

  2. This is an incredible story of forgiveness. Indeed holding onto even righteous anger can do nothing in some cases but fester like a wound. Their act is commendable and a lesson to us all. Thank you for sharing this Belinda.

  3. That video is very powerful indeed. To see these two men and hear their story. I hope that more people will see this and invite them to their schools and perhaps there will be less violence. Thank you for sharing and being a part of #WATWB

  5. So amazing that this father was able to come to this place of forgiveness and then go on to create this program to teach non-violence with the grandfather of his son’s killer. Gang violence is such a terrible, destructive force and these men show a way to combat it. I hope there message can reach all the young people it needs to reach.

  6. Thanks Belinda – I’ll have to watch the video later, thank you for providing it. The message is loud and clear though. Rather that letting sadness anger and bitterness rules our lives after such a tragedy, do something constructive with it as these two men have done.

  7. The compassion on display is truly inspirational. If only more of us could respond to everyday situations like these men did to such a monumental situation. Thanks for sharing this sad but beautiful story for #WATWB, Belinda. Have a great weekend!

  8. This is an awesome story of compassion and forgiveness by two wonderful men. How good would it be to have programs and people like this in every city in the U.S.? We’re having yet another conversation about gun laws after a school shooting, but are the systemic issues being addressed? Gang violence; alcohol, drug and mental health issues; lack of empathy and love for others, etc. also need our focus to make the streets and schools safe for everyone.

Thanks for bringing this story to #WATWB, Belinda.

  9. Forgiveness is so necessary. I’ve heard it said that not forgiving someone is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Unforgiveness will fester and grow, and it’s really a testimony to all involved that they were able to heal their situation as best they could through the not-always-so-simple act of forgiveness.

  10. Belinda, you just keep finding such fabulous stories. I never cease to be amazed at the quality of some TED talks. But, this story is so special. As one who wrestles with the both the teachings and practice of forgiveness, and as one who meditates myself, I find this story of these two fine men nothing less than inspiring. Thanks for posting and all you do for our WATWB. 🙂
